Our special Christmas Egg from Perutall, hand carved of Soapstone in the traditions of Peruvian artisians Huamanga stone carvings represent an original and unique form of expression in Latin American art. The carving of stones was very popular during the XVII century, a time when Spanish religious artists were characterized for the magnificent sense of movement which their sculptures possessed. Later, in the XIX and XX centuries, there was revival of Huamanga stone carving, however this time by the carvers from the indigenous communities who in turn gave the pieces their own particular style. The stone carvings are found, as their name indicates, in the city of Huamanga and the stone itself is excavated from nearby quarries in Cangallo. Its consistency is that of a calcareous, translucent stone which is extremely soft. On the one hand, these characteristics allow for the stone to be easily carved but on the other has meant that many older pieces have not survived the pass of time without being damaged.
