The Miraculous Nature of Rough Emeralds Emerald. This most beautiful of coloured gemstones has been revered for its soothing, natural, pure green hue throughout more than 4,000 years of human history. As Roman historian Pliny the Elder said in 1 A.D., "nothing greens greener than emerald." Strangely enough, only through a miracle of nature do emeralds exist at all. Rough emerald crystal is actually a form of mineral with no natural colour whatsoever -- beryl (aluminium beryllium silicate). The fine green colour of rough emeralds is derived from minute traces of chromium and vanadium that slowly replace the aluminium within the beryl. Normally, beryl, chromium and vanadium don't occur together in nature. But 65 million years ago, sedimentary and igneous rock in the earthÆs crust crushed down on the rock deep below the surface in certain areas of the globe, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, parts of Africa, Russia, and Columbia. Rising magma and metamorphism generated incredible heat and pressure, melting beryl, chromium and vanadium together into rough emerald crystals, to be found and prized by man millions of years later. Rough emeralds were originally mined in Egypt 4,000 years ago and worn by Queen Cleopatra. They were also mined in Columbia by the Spanish Conquistadors in the 1500s, who were actually were actually searching for gold when they came upon natives wearing incredible green gems unlike any they had seen before. Emeralds have long been revered throughout world history for their unique colour, healing properties, and high monetary value. In many cases, the finest emeralds actually exceed diamonds in price per carat. More recently, new deposits of extremely fine rough emeralds have been found in the Swat region of northern Pakistan. In fact, the best gems made from these fine rough emeralds are so lustrous and fracture-free, oiling them to hide surface-breaking cracks so common to most emeralds is unnecessary. These high grade Pakistani rough emeralds actually exceed the quality of the famous emeralds of Columbia, where the best rough emeralds were extracted centuries ago. The current market conditions reflect the premium being paid for these newly discovered gems. For some time now, high grade Afghan and Pakistani rough emeralds have been sold under the nameÆ - Colombian emerald - based on the fact that premium pricing is often obtained; however, the word is out and superior Pakistani emerald is now commanding top dollar because it has replaced Colombian emerald as the new standard in high quality, naturalÆ emerald (no treatment needed to bring out the emeralds natural beauty). In centuries gone by, Colombian emerald was the undisputed prize amongst emerald collectors, but with most of the higher quality natural mined out years ago, and with the new discovery of incredibly superb, natural Pakistani emerald, the premium prices once commanded for Colombian emerald are now being paid for Pakistani emerald. Colombian emerald is still readily available, but almost all of the Colombian emerald being sold today in cut form (polished stones) has been treated to enhance either the colour, clarity or both. Although Emerald is a stone of prosperity and riches, it is not just a materialistic stone. It also encourages spiritual growth, clear vision, memory, faith, intelligence and communication, inspiration, joy, intuition, clairvoyance, sensuality, love, romance, beauty, harmony, tranquility, serenity, clarity, cleansing, justice, friendship and unity. It seems that more kinds of physical healing have been ascribed to the emerald than to almost any other stone.
